Abstract

The article is devoted to the interpretation of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment (1865–1866, published in 1866) in German silent cinema. This interpretation of the novel refers to the films of the silent period in Germany and the work of emigration. In cinema, the problem becomes relevant as cinema develops as an art and, at the same time, the emergence of a literary script, a literary device in cinema, the emergence of such a problem as «literature and cinema». This article focuses on films of the silent period. The author of the article aims to trace the history of interpretation of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky in German silent cinema. The objectives of the article are to determine the most significant interpretations of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky during this period, to reveal their relationship with the literary text of F. M. Dostoevsky, while identifying the film language means necessary for the author to translate a literary text into film language. The author divides the article into several parts: firstly, we are talking about the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky as a story about a St. Petersburg student; secondly, about this novel in German silent cinema; thirdly, conclusions about a literary work in cinema of the early period, German silent cinema. To achieve this goal, the author of the article used not only literary texts, but also significant scientific works of researchers on the interaction of literature and cinema. The topic of this article is supposed to be especially significant for literary studies in its connection with other types of art.
