Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study the names of food used by A. P. Chekhov in various works. These names are considered from the point of view of thematic correlation. They will be studied from the point of view of thematic correlation, origin, semantics (in comparison with the current state of the language), stylistic differentiation, active and passive stock, functioning of these items in the text of the work, namely: frequency of use , connotative characteristic of these names, syntagmatic connections of these tokens with other words. The novelty of this study is the fact that so far no attempt has been made in linguistics to study the names of food in the works of A. P. Chekhov in this aspect. The writer’s idiom, despite some research, requires further attention, in particular, individual thematic groups of vocabulary. The main research method in this article is descriptive. A comprehensive study of food names in A.P. Chekhov’s works showed that they are different in origin, even within a genetically related subgroup. Most of the names considered are still active in thelanguage (bread, meal, food, foodstuffs, etc.), some go into a passive vocabulary (eat, food, grub). The names studied are somewhat stylistically different. The names eat, food, and grub are common. All words are neutral and do not have additional connotative increments.
