Abstract

The article presents an interlanguage comparative analysis of E. Poe's poem «THE CITY IN THE SEA» and its translations by Russian symbolist poets V. Ya. Bryusov and K. D. Balmont. The relevance of the topic of the article is due to the need to study the artistic heritage of the American writer of the XIX century in Russian translations, and the unrelenting interest in the processes of interaction between cultures. The purpose of the article is to conduct an interlanguage comparative analysis of E. Poe's poem «THE CITY IN THE SEA» and its translations by Russian poets of the Silver Age.

The object of literary analysis is E. Poe's poem «THE CITY IN THE SEA» and its translations by V. Y. Bryusov and K. D. Balmont. The subject of the study is the peculiarities of translations of E. Poe's poem by symbolist poets.

The study uses three main approaches to the analysis of the poetic text and its translations, which make it possible to determine their accuracy and compliance with the ideological and thematic content of the source text: the approaches of Yu. M. Lotman, S. F. Goncharenko, L. V. Shcherba.

From the point of view of the ideological and aesthetic analysis of English and Russian texts, the article notes the accuracy of the translators' transmission of the theme and idea of the original text, the tragic pathos of the poem. The study of the compositional structure of the source and translations shows full compliance with the original translation by V. Y. Bryusov, partial – by K. D. Balmont. The characteristic of the figurative system of all three works and the peculiarities of its development in semantic parts shows that K. D. Balmont and V. Ya. Bryusov translate the poem close to the original, preserving most of the important symbols for understanding its meaning. However, translators cannot avoid replacing words and adding authorial shades of meaning. The article concludes that the poetic translations of V. Ya. Bryusov and K. D. Balmont are close to the original in terms of ideological content, compositional and lexico-semantic structure.
