Abstract

The article is devoted to a topical problem of literary studies of the 20th – 21st centuries – the phenomenon of genre hybridity in literary works. In the 20th century the phenomenon of genre hybridity was analyzed by M. Bakhtin («Problems of Dostoevsky's poetics») [2]. In the 21st century, hybrid forms are studied at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences [5]. Я. Vojvodich [3], K. Z. Korolkova [9] deeply investigated hybridity in the genre of the story. In the article the author analyzes the mechanism of interaction of one genre with other genres in the process of hybridization. A genre form is a communicative factor realized in the «genre expectation». In the 20th and 21st centuries, writers strive to show the world «in all its 'fullness and complexity'». The authors' choice of the genre form «collection of short stories» allows the most complete realization of the idea. The author of the article analyzes a work of fiction – K. Saimak's novel «The City». The phenomenon of hybridity is noted both in the world fantastic literature and in movie fiction on a literary basis. «The City» by K. Saimak is characterized by «polyphony», the depth of philosophical content (R. Arbitman) [1, 330]. In the article, our hypothesis is that the novel «The City» is a complex multilevel artistic whole, which is simultaneously a novel and a philological investigation.

The previous experience of reading «The City» in literary studies, comprehension of the unique conception of this work, its novel problematics are invaluable, thanks to which at the present moment the prospects for studying the specifics of K. Saimak's genre thinking, comprehending the essence of his genre experiment – genre hybridity in the work «The City» have opened up.
