Abstract

The paper shows the changing role of the library in people's lives, its involvement in the educational process. It is noted that in the history of the development of librarianship in the 11-17th centuries, libraries became available to many cities of ancient Russia, playing the role of repositories of knowledge and contributing to social enlightenment. In the XVIII century, as a result of the reforms of Peter the Great, new types of libraries appeared, including public libraries, they became generally accessible and were to assist in building a strong state. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, zemstvos played a significant role in the development of librarianship, creating paid libraries and public libraries-reading rooms, which contributed to the development of libraries for different segments of the population and meeting educational needs. In the 20th century, mass public libraries began to operate, carrying out educational and cultural activities.

With the advent of computer technology in the 21st century, libraries have to adapt to new digital realities, innovate and meet societal challenges. Modern libraries face the challenge of digital transformation and are not only engaged in collecting and storing information, but also in conducting cultural and educational activities and organizing various humanitarian and social projects.

Modern libraries are actively developing online space, participating in social networks, providing access to information via the Internet, developing innovative projects and working to improve the availability of cultural content for different groups of users.
