Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify and describe the adherent connotations of the colour terms blau, синий and голубой, which are components of proverbs in Russian and German.

The object of the study is proverbs from the German and Russian language corpora that contain the colour terms blau, синий and голубой. The study aims to identify the reasons for certain adherent connotations of the above-mentioned color terms.

The objectives of the study are to describe the primary (basic) meanings of the colour terms blau, синий and голубой as presented in Russian and German etymological dictionaries; to examine the cultural and historical reasons that influenced the emergence of the adherent connotations of the colour terms blau, синий and голубой, which are components of proverbs; to conduct a comparative analysis of the similarities and differences in the adherent connotations of colour terms in Russian and German linguocultures.

The relevance of this work lies in the need to examine the contextual meanings of colour terms and identify their similarities and differences in two ethnocultures. The connotative meanings of colour terms in one language can differ significantly from those in another language. Understanding and knowing the contextual meanings of colour terms helps to gain a deeper understanding of a foreign speech, avoid lexical errors in translation, master a foreign language at a deeper level, and make one's speech more expressive and authentic.

The following methods were used in this study: general scientific descriptive, comparative-contrastive analysis, continuous sampling method, and contextual research method.

Color terms included in Russian and German proverbs are ambivalent. The adherent connotations of colour terms are determined by the lexical content of proverbs and are actualised in context.
