Abstract
The article analyzes the linguodidactic potential of conceptual metaphors as a means of secondary linguistic personality development, as well as substantiates the expediency of their identification.
Based on the literature on the research problem, the essential characteristics of the secondary linguistic personality as a three-level psychological construct and its structural components are examined, along with the specifics of idiomatic expressions as a language area characterized by its cultural richness, and the features of the mechanism of metaphorical conceptualization of reality within the framework of the cognitive theory of metaphor.
The relevance of the study is determined by insufficient exploration of the significance of identifying metaphorical models from a linguodidactic perspective; its novelty lies in considering idiomatic expressions through the prism of the secondary linguistic personality model and the cognitive theory of metaphor.
The research findings outline the advantages of analyzing conceptual metaphors of idioms in foreign language teaching within the context of each level of secondary linguistic personality. These advantages include developing linguistic guess via formation of a more structured mental lexicon, overcoming native language interference in the process of semanticization of idiomatic expressions, modelling speech behavior taking into consideration the relativity of perception and the specifics of the foreign language worldview, as well as the ability to decode communicative intentions, implicatures, and connotations. The outlined advantages are illustrated by some of the examples of metaphorical models specific for the English language and identified by the authors of the article.
The area for further research may include describing specific methods of integrating the analysis of conceptual models into the educational process and its corresponding organization, as well as developing methods for organizing experimental work and evaluating its effectiveness.
