Abstract

The article focuses on the genre of ode as an object of 17–18th centuries English poets‘ theoretical reflection. ―Discourses…‖ on an ode and lyrical poetry by A. Cowley, W. Congreve and E. Young that concerned mainly formal aspect of Pindaric ode are under consideration. It is stressed that irregular Pindaric ode (―pindarick‖) created by A. Cowley is popular in the second half of the 17th century. In the 18th century the trend to the exact reconstruction of the formal structure of Pindar‘s odes (W. Congreve, T. Gray) as well as the inclination for regularity and simplicity of Horatian ode are observed.
