Abstract
The article analyzes the peculiarities of reading in the everyday lifeframe of Magnitogorsk citizens on the basis of the analysis of A. N. Derzhavin’s diary and V. F. Berseneva’s letters. The author concludes that, despite the hardships of the wartime, the Great Patriotic war caused a significant reader activity, the preconditions of which were the achievements of the government in creating a "new reader" by the early 1940s. However, one should take into consideration factors determined the reader's preferences: the level of education, professional activities and the reader’s socialization process.
