Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the characteristics of the use of discursive lexical units in the speech of English adolescents. The methods of continuous sampling, quantitative analysis, classification, and linguistic analysis were used to attempt to classify the most frequently used discursive words. The most frequently used discursive words of the modern English language were identified, described, classified, and interpreted as a result of the study of teenagers' speech; additionally, their use was illustrated by language examples from the novel. Based on empirical data, the study provided a general description of the classes of discursive words in modern English.

The research is important because of the growing interest in the semantics of various discursive markers, as well as the need to understand the living components of speech in linguistic terms. The class of words, known as "filler" words, is still understudied and attracts the attention of linguists.

The study focuses on discursive words in modern English.

The peculiarities of the use of discursive words in the speech of English teenagers in D. Darling's novel "The taxi driver's daughter" are the subject of the study.

The practical significance of this research lies in the fact that its materials can be used in the theory and practice of teaching English, specifically in courses of country studies and intercultural communication, translation theory and stylistics, as well as cognitive linguistics and cultural linguistics.
