Abstract

The object of the study is Russian and English steady combinations with the component иметь / to have, which include a nominal component with primary object semantics. The focus of the study is on the mechanisms of the rethinking the component composition of such combinations. The study aims to explain the mechanisms of formation of figurative meaning. The study tasks are to determine the composition and primary semantics of the nominal components, fixed in steady combinations with the component иметь / to have, reveal the motivational relationships underlying the rethinking of the component composition of combinations, as well as carry out a comparative analysis of the studied units.

The study revealed that the figurative meaning of Russian and English steady combinations with the component иметь / to have is formed, as a rule, on the basis of explainable associations between the denotative area representing the denoted and the primary denotative area of the components involved in the nomination process. The mutual influence of semantics of the components in the combinations on the formation of the expression meaning as a whole is noted.

The combinations analyzed in both languages are characterized by the fact that the nominal components have their primary semantics (some of them – one of the secondary semantics) as the names of both artifacts and natural objects. A number of Russian and English steady combinations with the component иметь / to have, which have identical structure and semantics, were identified. Similar images have been found in multi-structural Russian and English steady combinations characterizing a person by their mental abilities.
