Abstract
The research focuses on the patterns of the use of proverbial expressions in the headlines of news reports of the Internet space. The relevance of the topic is explained by the high demand for set expressions in Internet communication. The functioning of set expressions in the media space is being actively studied, but the use of proverbs in news genres has not been studied enough yet.
News sites play an important role in mass communication, and the proverbs used in the news reports of the network make a considerable contribution to the revival of this communicative process, as they serve as special means of attracting the attention of the addressee.
To form a database of actual proverbial expressions, materials of the explanatory “Dictionary of Russian Proverbs” edited by Professor V. M. Mokienko were used. The source of the material for analyzing the functioning of proverbs in speech was the texts of news reports on specialized websites.
Five types of use of a proverb in the headline of a news message have been identified: a proverb is presented in the headline in autonomous use without punctuation marks; a proverb is presented in the headline in autonomous use with a punctuation mark; a proverb is used as part of a double title; a proverb is used as a segmented unit of the title; a proverb is used as a part of a simple (as a phrasal nomination) or complex sentence-headline.
In the headings, proverbs can be used both in canonical and transformed form. The main techniques for transforming proverbs in headlines are the following: the reduction of the component composition, the distribution of the component composition, the replacement of the component, the literalization of the figurative meaning and the transition of the statement into a question.
