Abstract
The subject of the study in this work were statements with predicates of obligation, fixed in the language material. Our interest in the study of the translation of statements with modal meanings is caused by increased attention to the role of language as a means of communication and individualization of the mental and speech process of a person.
The purpose of the presented work is to identify typical features of the translation of statements with the modal meaning of the obligation from French into Russian, as well as from Russian into French. The article considers the peculiarities of the translation of French modal verbs, their comparison with the predicates of obligation in the Russian language. A comparative analysis of other means of expressing the modality of obligation which are selected from texts in Russian and their translations into French is carried out. The rarely encountered ways of transmitting modality in French and Russian and peculiarities of their translation are analyzed.
The material for practical research was microtexts with obligation statements. Examples are extracted from literary texts in French and Russian and their translations.
The method of research is a comparative technique that allows us to identify the similarities and differences in the structures of the French and Russian languages.
As a result of a comparative study, the quantitative predominance of contextual correspondences of the French complex predicate and the reasons for such predominance were established.
The theoretical and practical significance lies in the fact that the analysis carried out is relevant in the study of the comparative typology of the two languages, and the results obtained have practical and theoretical value for the theory of comparative linguistics and can be used in the theory and practice of teaching translation from French.
