The experience of creating a lexicographic project of the basic explanatory dictionary-manual "The student will understand the student better" for the average level of proficiency in Russian as a foreign language (B1) by the first-year students of the program "National Philology" is described. The practical significance of the project method in the process of teaching philology students is analyzed taking into account the Federal State Educational Standard in the program 45.03.01 "Philology". The article highlights such stages of work on the creation of the manual as the selection of linguistic material, the study of theoretical provisions of educational lexicography and teaching Russian as a foreign language, the creation of a set of multimedia presentations, describes the skills and abilities that students managed to develop during each stage. The article demonstrates the success of the development of students’ professional skills when using the project activity method at an early stage of higher education, necessary for future professional activity in various aspects: research, pedagogical and lexicographic. In addition, special attention is paid to the value of this manual not only for native-speaker students and for foreign-speaker students, but also for teachers as an additional educational and methodological resource. The practical usefulness in the formation of students' information retrieval skills using a variety of tools, including digital, and analysis of the obtained data is noted. The importance of such projects is seen in deepening the students' knowledge of the Russian language as a system, acquiring skills of intercultural communication, as well as in improving the system of modern philological education.
